Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart shoves fan during Texas Tech loss

Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart got a little heated at the end of the Cowboys’ 65-61 loss at Texas Tech on Saturday.

With just more than six seconds left in the game, Smart fouled Red Raiders’ forward Jaye Crockett on a dunk attempt and flew onto the ground on the baseline. As Smart was being helped up, he turned around and exchanged words with an older fan before shoving the man. Smart was then restrained by his teammates.

Smart was sent to the bench and assessed a technical foul, but he was not removed from the court.

reporters say a racial slur was involved that drove smart to react.

The old guy clearly says "sorry about that"  right before Smart lashes out.  I'd like to see a longer clip.

I really think he just made a mistake with the hands on....as a player in college or the NBA there are always going to be passionate fans...keep your character & cool. At the end of the day it is a sport but it is still a business there's not one business you can name that wants that type of publicity on their team. This is going to be a money maker for you all that "hater" wants to do is mess all that up... I dont car who it is you will not mess up my money like that... I will ignore you all night long. SMH

Not a smart move on his part, but he knows that now. He'll probably be suspended. No point in beating a man when he's down. He'll learn from it. Now let's all move on and not give it any more attention.

If your trying to distract or get into a players head, it worked. Once Smart is married for a few years he will learn the art of ignoring someone!

I'm not justifying what Smart did. but a 50-something year old adult who attends college basketball games and intentionally heckles and antagonizes college athletes 30+ years his junior with profanities and vulgar gestures (as Orr apparently has done in the past), is a pathetic excuse for a human being who needs to have his ticket holding privileges revoked.

Big 12 may need to look beyond this incident only.  Smart made huge mistake and will pay the price for it...but don't forget last year when an angry ISU fan confronted Bill Self after game in Ames.  However, Self kept his cool and just walked away.

well here is what is currently been speculated- Seth Davis ‏@SethDavisHoops  2m

Pure guess but I think Smart will get 2-3 gms. I've heard suggestions he might get 5 or more. Diff bt a shove & a punch tho both are wrong.

****

LUCKY-- This guy could have and I think should have been out for the year-- It's not just a shove vs hit-- it's the attack and the LIE- pulling and playing the RACE CARD-/ N-WORD- has the ability to incite more violence to fans--- If his penalty is too light-- expect more assaults and some folks look for CRED` instead of WINS

Ask any UT or A&M alum who the most despised, belligerent, idiotic fanbase in Texas is, and they will all point at ITT tech. It's one thing to hold a home advantage, a whole different thing is to act out like west Texas trailer park trash every game. Remember a few years back when these dumbazzes threw a goalpost into the A&M visitors section after a win in Lubbock?

DavidK

This idiot fanbase has shown time and time again why they are the most clASSless in the state. This behavior permeates every major sport the tech tards play in.

Hell, he should've smacked the fat blowhard. Guys in the stands who think they can say anything are disgusting. Nobody's worse than the Cameron Crazies mocking players over a death in their family....

Glad he stayed in school an extra year. He badly needs to mature and the NBA already has its share of JR Smiths.

Steve King, in looking at the video, I do not at all see what you are seeing. Sorry, man, appears to be no evidence of a hand getting stepped on.

That said, clearly Smart should have been the bigger man and just went back to the court. But that can sometimes be hard when you are young and caught up in the emotion of the game.

Clearly Orr said something Smart did not like hearing. So many people are saying Smart is making up that Orr used a racial slur. Sure that is possible, but does anyone really expect Orr to admit the truth as to what he actually said? Likewise, the women with him will clearly back him even if it means lying. Too many people these days like to run their mouth, then when they get called on it, they want to lie or act like the victim.

Man up Mr. Orr! Go to the media and tell the truth as to EXACTLY what you did say. Then stay home and watch the games on television if you can't control your mouth. This situation was instigated by Orr and Smart handled it wrong. I say Smart deserves no further punishment.

Oh and before anyone attacks my comments, I am a 50 year old white man from small town white America, and I say man up Orr and do the right thing, which is to publicly admit what you said and apologize to a young man who is taking all the ridicule for something you instigated.

The fan who was"assaulted" , Jeff Orr has a history of  heckling and being inappropriate at the basketball games. It would be way different if he hadn't have had a history of making obscene gestures and comments at the basketball games, but he did. In a 2010 interview by Texas Tech University, it featured a youtube video that showed clips of him making an offensive, repulsive gesture towards one of HIS OWN players. Someone who was texting him, tweeted part of their conversation which said, "yeah i kinda let my mouth say something i shouldn't have". Even he knows he did something to deserve the shove! Also, the look on his face when Marcus starts to get up is a look of what the hell did I just do? That shows that he knows he did/said something that was out of line.

Terrible incident but what the heck are the TT fans doing rushing the court after beating a team that is barely ranked and has a losing conference record?! What a joke!

@davidellis  He called him a piece of crap. Last I checked, that isn't a racial slur.

The story should be about Fan behavior. It's common place for the Fan to attack the Athlete.

6marK6

@scholarlymama  So his behavior is pathetic because he is in his 50s? Or because the behavior itself was bad? Not sure I understand your line of, well, logic?

illinois74

@CoachDave25  The difference is Self is a mature older man, while Smart is still an immature college age young man. Most college age kids are no more mature than Smart. I use the term kid because at my age, college age is a kid.

@DavidK  Your grammar indicates that you should refrain from imputing fans of Texas Tech with idiocy.

@illinois74  When you are on the road, you should expect to be heckled...a lot.  If you can't take a little ribbing from the opposing team's fans, maybe basketball isn't for you.  You should look into something softer like competitive knitting.

If Smart was a bench player in Dayton, he would be kicked off the team.

Carolina_Blue_Forever

@zairhiaac1319  Is this guy "heckling" any different from the "Cameron Crazies"?? If you've ever been to a Duke game you'd know. And the students are so close to the court I've seen them actually touch opposing players inbounding a ball from the sidelines. To further prove my point at the Duke attitude, players and fans, see the tweet from Jabari Parker to Smart telling him "I got your back bro"

Is Orr's "harassment" any worse than that of Spike Lee sitting courtside at Knick games? C'mon people, it's all part of the game. In football it's the 12th man, in basketball it's the "6th man". I don't have any idea what Orr said, nor do I care but players should know better and also know they are going to get heckled at away games. It's part of the game. Unfortunately some fans go overboard and may say something inappropriate, but remember, sticks and stones...

@chicago25624  you do realize that there are much more hockey or  baseball players that routinely have more fights and altercations than basketball players do.  Why is it "another thug roodrat basketballer?  Sounds like some racial bias on your end buddy.

@6marK6 @scholarlymama  The behavior itself is bad, but magnified because it is came from 50 something year old man who clearly needs to grow up. Somewhat expected, though not really acceptable, from a college age person, but much more foolish and immature coming from an older person. What purpose does Orr's behavior serve? None really.

DavidK

I would say, "Good grammar burn", if my posts did in fact contain grammatical mistakes. However, there aren't any. I am assuming you are referring to "tech tard" or "ITT Tech". These are common terms of affection amongst other Texas residents for Tech fans like Orr.

When a old man feels that sort of need to heckle he has his own issues. Mainly that it is time to grow up. It serves no purpose.
